eXact® LEADQuick™
for Lead Testing

Device consists of a 476 nm handheld photometer and reagent system that can measure on site lead (as Pb+2) levels in either water (as low as 3 μg/L), soil (as low as 50 mg/kg) or paint (as low as 0.05 mg/cm2). Determination is completed in 10-15 minutes. Applicable patents include: U.S. Patent 7333194; South Africa Patent #2007/ 0628; International Patent app in. No. PCT/US2005/033985; and Eur. Pat. App. 1,725,864

Question?

Description of this product's primary function as clearly as possible follows: What does it do? How does it do it? What theories, if any, are involved?

Answer:

Lead in the water sample is first solubilized to Pb+2 by the addition of the ACID-1 reagent. Pb-2 Buffer is then added to make the solution alkali. The eXact® Strip Pb-3 is dipped for 20 seconds with gentle motion, which adds the porphyrin indicator and mixes the solution. After a one minute wait, which allows for the porphyrin and Pb+2 to form a colorimetric complex, the eXact® LEADQuick™ Colorimeter automatically zeros. The eXact® Strip Pb-4 is dipped into the cell sample for twenty seconds with gentle motion. This motion releases EDTA into the sample which then breaks up the colorimetric porphyrin-Pb2+ complex. After a one minute wait, the result is displayed in µg (μg/L) as Lead. The higher the drop of the abs value, the higher the lead level present in the sample. The system will also detect Mercury and Cadmium. Mercury uses similar chemistry while the Cadmium test uses Hydrochloric acid to solubilize the cadmium ions in the sample.

A procedure using the porphyrin 5,10,15,10-terakis(1-methylpyridinium-4yl)porphine as indicator is described by K. Kawamura, et al. in Microchim Acta volume 157, pages 87-91, 2007. The advanced photometer system, in combination with the eXact® Strip reagent delivery device, utilizes a unique, patented test procedure; since the photocell is built into the meter the cell is undisturbed between the zeroing and reading steps. This unique feature of the LEADQuick™ system delivers optimum accuracy and sensitivity. This sensitivity allows for the detection of lead down to 3ug/L with minimal, non-technical effort. With only four (4) reagents, seven (7) steps, and under ten minutes the system covers a detection range of 0ug/L to 500ug/L for lead. From our lab and contract lab studies with LEADQuick™ we found that over 90% of the typical potable, municipally treated water samples experienced no interference with the ions present in the different tap waters.

Question?

What is the summary of how your product improves upon competitive product or technology?

Answer:

Our product is faster, non-technical to operate, and has expanded applications for soil and lead paint testing.

Question?

What is the principal application of this product?

Answer:

Water: On-site reliable testing of Lead in drinking water to confirm water contains less than USEPA MCL (Maximum Containment Level) 15 μg/L. The chart below illustrates the detection profile for this Lead water test system.

Soil: On-site, reliable Lead screening of soil samples to confirm soil is below USEPA allowable 1000 mg/kg level.

Paint: On-site reliable Lead screening of paint samples to confirm lead in paint is below USEPA allowable 1.0 mg/cm2. The chart below illustrates the detection profile for this Lead paint test system.

Question?

What other applications can the product be used for?

Answer:

Water: For Cadmium and Mercury screening of environmental sample for contamination with these metals.

Soil: On-site Cadmium and Mercury screening of soil samples is under development.

Question?

What kind of mercury does the test detect?

Answer:

This kit does NOT detect metylmercury which is the most commonly found in the environment. This kit only detects mercury as Hg+2.

Question?

Why in layman’s terms will this kit be useful?

Answer:

Water Testing: USEPA and Congress continue to classify lead as a substance hazardous to the public health, and especially detrimental to normal childhood development. Widespread use of this simple, but accurate, field test method will quickly and accurately determine public exposure to toxic lead.

Paint Testing: Congressional regulation requires that beginning April 22, 2010, New Rules for Contractors performing work that disturbs any paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must:

  • Be EPA certified, and
  • Follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.
  • Determine if Lead levels require compliance with these new rules.
This product has completed the ETV program for Lead determination in Paint; and results will be released publically this summer.
