Elevated levels of arsenic found in upstate NY well water

July 6th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Another scary well water story from the Rochester (NY) area. Residents in the small town of Webster have private wells that tested positive for elevated levels of arsenic. Officials believe its a result of past use of pesticides on farms throughout the area known for its fruit production. The wells tested over the state standard of 10 parts per billion, the number used to measure the concentration that represents one microgram per liter of water. The current federal standard for public drinking water is 10 ppb. A recommendation issued is that each of the 5,000 well-owners in the county test their water at least once for arsenic. We have the best arsenic test kits on the market used throughout the world.

The health department also is recommending annual testing for coliform bacteria, nitrates, sodium and turbidity. If you are a well owner, it is your responsibly to do annual water testing. This page on the EPA’s website has useful information on water protection.
